The Department of Pedodontics provides undergraduate and graduate education in comprehensive oral health care for pediatric patients. The department serves children’s dental patients both through the general pediatrics clinic and as a dedicated health unit within the Faculty of Dentistry. Pedodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the oral health of children from birth through adolescence. Pedodontists not only promote oral health in children but also serve as educational resources for parents.
The comprehensive oral health services offered in pedodontics include:
Infant oral health examinations with risk assessment for maternal and childhood caries, preventive care including cleaning and fluoride treatments, nutritional and dietary guidance, and habit counseling (e.g., pacifier use and thumb-sucking).
Early assessment and treatment for proper tooth alignment and correction of malocclusions (orthodontic care).
Restoration of dental caries or defects.
Diagnosis and management of oral conditions associated with systemic diseases such as diabetes, congenital heart defects, asthma, hay fever, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
Treatment of periodontal diseases and their consequences, oral ulcers, short frenulum, mucoceles, and pediatric periodontal conditions.
Management of dental trauma, including fractured, displaced, or avulsed teeth.
